Slash in the Studio // Episode 3

Derrière chaque grand album, il y a un grand producteur. Voici Eric Valentine.


Slash: When I was doing the last solo record, I was looking for a producer and I found a handful of records that Eric Valentine had done, and I'd loved how diverse his tastes were. I hooked up with Eric and played him some demos, and somehow he just managed to catch on exactly what was going on in my head. So we just clicked right away.

Todd: The initial demos that we were making, they've definitively evolved. We had changed the arrangements, changing tempos. This happened a thousand times for it seemed like a lifetime before Eric Valentine even came into the room. And when Eric came in, he was like "This is some great work you guys have done! Now let's tear this all apart and put it back together again!” But his instincts were so amazing.

Brent: I just think the end result is just gonna be leaps and bounds ahead of anything; at least I've been apart because Eric was so thrilled.

Myles: I trust his instincts. Eric Valentine is just ultimately gonna build the sound around what Slash is set up. I'm basically throwing in the whole sauce pick.

Slash: This record has been very inspirational for me and I've been having a blast doing it. We put a lot of work into it. And all the guys played great, we got along great, and they have a real keen sense of what rock 'n' roll is all about, and the rules and how it works, and just the energy in the attitude of it.

Eric: I've always wanted to do this and I've never really had an opportunity to, so... Before the songs are recorded, maybe for just like the main body of the recording, they actually perform some of these songs live.

Slash : Tout en travaillant sur mon dernier album solo, je cherchais un producteur et je suis tombé sur plusieurs albums produits par Eric Valentine, et j’ai adoré qu’il ait des goûts aussi variés. J’ai pris contact avec Eric et je lui ai joué quelques démos, et il est parvenu à comprendre précisément ce qui se passait dans ma tête. Nous avons accroché tout de suite.

Todd : Les premières démos que nous avons faites ont beaucoup évolué. Nous avons modifié les arrangements, changé les tempos. Et ce un millier de fois pour ce qui a semblé une éternité avant même qu’Eric Valentine ait mis un pied dans la pièce. Puis Eric est arrivé, et il nous a dit : « Vous avez fait du super boulot les gars ! Mais maintenant, on va tout déstructurer et tout recomposer ». Mais il a eu un sacré flair.

Brent : Je pense que le résultat final va aller bien au-delà de tout ce qui a été déjà fait ; du moins c’est comme ça que je le ressens car Eric était tellement enthousiaste.

Myles : J’ai confiance en son instinct. Eric Valentine est capable de composer un son autour de ce que fait Slash. Je ne fais que pimenter la sauce.

Slash : Cet album m’a beaucoup inspiré et je me suis éclaté en le faisant. Nous avons énormément travaillé. Et tous les gars ont vraiment bien joué, nous étions sur la même longueur d’onde ; ils ont le rock dans le sang, ils en connaissent les règles, ils savent comment ça marche et ont la bonne attitude.

Eric : J’ai toujours voulu faire ça, mais je n’en ai jamais vraiment eu l’occasion... Avant d’enregistrer les chansons, pour disons seulement le gros de l’enregistrement, ils jouent certaines de ces chansons en direct.

Myles : La pression monte... merde !
