Slash in the Studio // Episode 9 
Les auditions pour recruter le nouveau guitariste rythmique Frank Sidoris.

Slash: To put together this next record, I've never planned on using a second guitar player. But as far as going out and doing the tour was concerned I needed to find somebody local. We had a whole auditioning process where I think 20 people showed up and Brent and Todd sort of picked out who was gonna be more or less a call back and I went in the next day and played with those five guitar players.

Slash: They're all great, you know, there was one guy named Christian who I thought was really good.

Christian: Hi, my name is Christian Martugi. I've started playing guitar when I was about 5 years old.

Slash: Originally, Brent suggested this guitar player Frank, and so I went down to the Roxy and I saw him in a band called, I think called The Cab. Completely different kind of music and really not a good example for me to see this guy in that context, but, you know, he seemed like a cool enough guy so I figured at least we can do the audition and he was amazing. So when it came down to there was just Christian and Frankie, it was sort of a universal idea. I really listened to my own heart on that one. It was a tough decision, but from what I can tell from the day that he played with me, he just had the right feel and it's all about the feel. It's not so much about specific techniques per se or how... You know, it's not a lead guitar spot, so it's not about how fast you can play. It's really about how you play the material which is already recorded and the feel is already sort of provided, if you can play that to where it feels natural. So it was between Frank and Christian, and we went up on Frank.

Slash : Pour ce nouvel album, je n’ai jamais songé à faire appel à un deuxième guitariste. Mais lorsqu’il a fallu partir en tournée, j’ai dû trouver quelqu’un du coin. Nous avons mis en place des auditions où je crois 20 personnes se sont présentées, et Brent et Todd ont en quelque sorte choisi ceux qui allaient revenir et le jour suivant j’ai écouté jouer ces cinq guitaristes.

Slash : Ils sont tous doués, mais il y avait ce type Christian que je trouvais vraiment bon.

Christian : Salut, je m’appelle Christian Martugi. J’ai commencé à jouer de la guitare quand j’avais 5 ans.

Slash : Au départ, Brent avait proposé ce guitariste Frank, et je suis donc allé le voir jouer au Roxy avec un groupe qui s’appelle The Cab je crois. Ils ont un style de musique complètement différent, et je ne suis pas sûr que c’était une bonne idée de voir ce gars jouer dans ce contexte, mais il me semblait être un type plutôt cool alors je me suis dit que nous pouvions au moins lui faire passer l’audition et il a été incroyable. Alors on était tous d’accord que ça allait se jouer entre Christian et Frank. J’ai vraiment écouté mon cœur sur ce coup-là. La décision n’a pas été facile à prendre, mais je peux dire que dès qu’il a joué avec moi, il a eu le bon feeling et c’est tout ce qui compte. Ce n’est pas une question de technique en soi ou… Vous voyez, je ne cherche pas un guitariste solo, alors ce n’est pas une question de rapidité. Il s’agit avant tout de savoir jouer un morceau déjà enregistré et dont l’esprit est déjà établi, et tout ça de façon à ce que ça sonne naturel. Ca s’est joué entre Frank et Christian, et nous avons choisi Frank.
